Are baby girls still looked down upon in China?
I know that boys are valued over girls which led to a huge difference in boy/girl populations including abortions, but are times changing that having a girl is now becoming more and more popular? Has the Chinese government encouraged parents to have a girl? Has the status of women greatly improved?
That problem lies very deep.
Traditionally in China (and many other parts of the world), sons stay with their parents when they marry, while daughters move to their husband’s family (although this is changing among the modern city populations). If you have just one child (as per the Chinese one-child-policy), this means, if you have a son, you have your son’s family taking care of you when you get old, but if you have a daughter you have no one. Add to the picture the severely deficient retirement system in China – often your company offers quite good help for you after you retire, if you happen to live in the richer Eastern part of China, but for the majority that doesn’t have that help (like the enormous rural populations), having a son who takes care if you is actually crucial for your survival in old age.
I guess this problem cannot be fully solved before the government offers a better retirement system for the majority of the Chinese. Actually, the situation as regards this question was better during the communist years, when the government still offered help for retired, free health care, and so on, but since China changed into a capitalist economic system (without the social, and of course democratic, components it usually has in Europe), the problem has become much worse again.
On the positive side can be added that the government at least seems to be aware of the problem. Several inside the ruling clique actually seems to have the will to reform the inferior social system of China, if not other because it would quell the more and more widespread social protests around China.
