The book, Lola? What book? The screenplay was written by Robert Rodat. There is no book mentioned in the writing credits at all.

Anyhow, I thought that the scene with the Captain and the Sergeant reminiscing in the bombed out building about “What’s his name? That kid in North Africa?” was pretty good. I hated that opening combat scene. 25 minutes of fake blood and CGI-generated tripe.
In fact, I thought that the whole thing was one over-long war film that was just OK… nothing special at all. The HBO series “Band of Brothers” was SO much better, but then, it was almost 13 hours long!
