Talking with Heidi and Randy Gunn

gunn There may not be a more aptly named ministry than that of Randy and Heidi Gunn. From Extreme Rodeo to Musical Concerts, from Mounted Shooting to Cowboy Church, GunnPoint Music & Ministry touches the lives of cowboys around the country.

Now, the Gunns are about to reach a whole new audience with the September 22 release of Set Apart, a movie that stars John Schneider, Richard Roundtree, Jennifer O'Neill ... and the Gunns as themselves.

"The producers saw us perform and they learned about our work with cowboys and thought it would make for an interesting movie," Randy says. "When they flew in to talk with us, they asked us if we would be comfortable playing ourselves.

"The story they wanted to tell involved taking some troubled kids from the inner city and having us teach them the "Cowboy Way." I told them about my brother John's ministry—the Power Company Kids Club— and what they do in the inner city."

From that initial story idea came Set Apart. George Flynn, who has served with the Gunns for years, took those ideas and crafted the screenplay for the movie.

"I was very fortunate. I've written scripts for productions, but this is the first one on this scale," George says. "I'm very proud, very excited, and very privileged to be a part of this film."

The film has the look and feel of an old Western movie. Richard Roundtree adds to that aura with his role as J.T.

"Richard really shined," Heidi says. "He has such a great heart and he brought a lot to that part. And John Schneider brought a lot of fun to the set. That guy can act!"

"All the actors seemed truly appreciative to be part of the movie," Randy adds. "They were all very professional and we learned quite a bit about the dos and don'ts of acting."

So will acting be something the Gunns continue to do in the future? In addition to all of their ongoing ministry and music commitments, they are—as ever—open to doing whatever God would have them do. After all, a movie was never on their docket.

"It's just funny," Heidi says. "God just keeps opening up doors!"
